US Marines of 12th Marine Regiment firing M982 Excalibur 155 mm extended range guided artillery shell from an M777 Ultralight-weight Field Howitzer (UFH).

The M777 Ultralight-weight Field Howitzer (UFH) is a towed 155 mm artillery piece which has replaced the older M198 howitzer in the United States Marine Corps.


 The M777 howitzer  is being used by the US Marines in Afghanistan since February 2006 in close support situations where friendly forces are operating very close to the Afghan militants.

 US Marines of 12th Marine Regiment firing M982 GPS-guided Excalibur ammunition which has a range of 40 to 57 kilometres with a circular error probable (CEP) of 20m against the conventional 155 mm shells which have a CEP of 200 m.
